Picture this: You’ve just walked into Coach Brady’s Wednesday Fundamentals class and you hear someone say, “Are you staying for No-Gi?” Confused, you walk into your changing room and get ready for class, putting on your gi and tying your belt around your waist still having no idea what No-Gi is. After Coach Brady’s class ends, you notice people around you waiting for the next class are dressed in tight fitting rashguards, spats, and grappling shorts. Not a gi in sight. The oversimplified answer to “What is No-Gi?” is simply Jiu Jitsu without the gi. No gi. Due to the nature of not having a gi, there are some differences in the style of ....

Gym bags are nifty things. They carry your gi, change of clothes, and the odd year-old nut bar or two. If you’re not careful, the items in your gym bag can easily add up and before you know it, you’re lugging around an entire general store around in your bag. To enhance your gym bag user experience, here are our suggestions for what to put in a gym bag. Change of clothes. Especially in the winter months, a change of clothes is great. You don’t want to be sitting in your sweat on your drive home, so adding a change of clothes to get into after hitting the gym is a must. Water bottle. Any good workout leaves you tired and thirsty. Having a water bottle in your ....

New Year’s Day is upon us and with it many people are resolving to do things differently than they did the year before. Common New Year’s resolutions are the following: Exercise every day Lose weight Get in shape Wake up earlier Eat healthy Be happy Typically, a New Year’s resolution only lasts about a month before people give up for various reasons. The toys dropped into the boxes, one right after the other as competitors, their parents, and other spectators trickled into Alpha Jiu-Jitsu and Fitness on the crisp Saturday afternoon. It was the first annual Alpha Jiu Jitsu and Fitness Winter Soldier Tournament. The tournament was designed as a toy drive for Toys for Tots held by the Marines. Professor Hernando Thola and Coach Brady Hiestand scurried around the mats making sure everything was set up correctly. Tech support was there to make sure the computers were mirrored successfully and there weren’t any bugs to sort out. This was imperative as Professor Hernando and Coach Brady, the referees, needed to see the points and ....

At one o’clock PM, Pacific Standard Time, Alpha Jiu Jitsu + Fitness kicked off its first Eight Man Elimination EBI-style tournament. The tension in the air was thick as the eight men, ranked purple to black, warmed up. $500 was on the line and each man knew they were going to win it. Ryan Mulvihil (black belt) and Morgan Matuizek (purple belt) slapped hands and bumped fists. Matuizek immediately sat down to play guard--his dominant strength. Mulvihil tried passing the guard, almost made it, and was captured between the legs of Matuizek. Matuizek body triangled Mulvihil. Mulvihil, in turn, stood up and shook him down. Matuizek landed in full guard. Attempting the ....
